I'm Not There

I hope when you open your heart for a look, I'm not there.
It sounds bitter, but it's because I still almost care.
Why would I, should I, want you to miss me?
It's better for us both if you laugh and dismiss me.
I'm really the last person you should ever be thinking of.
We had fun. We had a short run. I'm not sure we had love.
If the memories hurt you, I'd be sorry just the same.
I never did desert you. I don't live to cause you pain.
I don't need well-wishes. Don't wonder if I've healed yet.
Do what I should have done long ago. Just forget.

  1. This poem is an intentional contradiction of a notion that comes up in a lot of pop music.
