Why I Write, Part x+64: A Wide Base of Influence

A writer's often told that it's most important he read,
Because a wide base of influence is something he needs,
But influence can be as simple as keeping the radio loud,
Letting the music industry tell him how to write and what to write about.

Critics speak of "the anxiety of influence,"
But my anxiety depends on what my influence is.
That which confines my metaphors to one part of life
Is thorough guilt of influence, and I apologize.
