Numbered Days

On cookie-cutter blocks, the houses built with numbered days there
Have a look of age and permanence, as if their temporary nature
Is the punchline to a joke that begins with doubt
Corrected by the faces always moving in and out.
We tell the same joke when we live life on the ceiling of the room.
Talk of “forever” is like a morning walk in the late afternoon.
We're upside-down ignorant of the nature of living.
It's the most meaningful, memorable thing we've been given:

A temporary stay of execution.
