Beauty's Way (LAX to KOA)

An island's unspent blue and green, when framed by stormy skies
Only add a memory to my lover's changing eyes.
Forests of forbidding crags or a volcano's growing height
Only compliment the strength of those who to the peak alight,
But in skies front-lighted by a million ersatz stars,
Where signs hawk their wares, flash the color of Mars,
In all glamor's decoration I do not see
The very faintest touch of substantive beauty.
Next to a simple country night, this expensive neon glow
Is no more substitute than my love is her shadow.
