The Threshold

When the DEA came for the drug pushers,
I believed they were a more necessary evil
Than violent dealers who buy from tyrant leaders.

When the SWAT teams came for the anarchists,
I thought that government is best which governs least–
As long as it still does actually govern.

When the TSA came for the fingernail clippers,
I figured that's what the night before the flight out is for.

When the NSA came with its drone strikes,
I felt that being all pudgy and fleshy
Might actually be good for my health
In the face of a missile's guidance systems,

But once even the once freedom-loving state of Montana
Passed a primary seatbelt law,
Then even I knew that government had grown out of control.
