As You Walked By

While I was on a walk alone
(For years, the only walk I've known)
I saw you from a fair ways off
and waited for you as I walked.
It was just the trail and two of us
and your dog between us
(It took a complete denial of self not to scratch his ears.)
He walked by without a look,
Despite his nose of half a foot
But yours, though of a comely human size
Managed to sniff out my longing, my need.
You smiled as you walked by
and then sighed exasperatedly.
