In poems I live fractions of a hundred
other lives.
It's the only way to do it without
changing all the time
Or having to skin myself, wear new
brains and masks –
Without even having to learn how to
act.
I can be young, old, kind, scared or
aggressive,
Know all the right lines, or not how to
address it.
I can be your faithful, unshameable
fool
Or have no intentions of that sort
toward you.
Of course, to play at reliable or more
than base is ludicrous,
and, of course, that's entirely the fun
of it.
"It is a weakness with me, but to be fair to myself, it is my only weakness."
