Colloquial Metaphor

Idiom is transmitted culturally
Serving to introduce personal mystery.
The expressions we use are like masks that we say –
They may not say anything about us anyway.
The ones that annoy me to fraying ear-ends
Are generally the favorites of my favorite friends,
(Like “holding together body and soul,”
Which confers something spiritual on the material,)
While I learn most of my favorite expressions
From small-minded jerks I'd like to teach lessons.
